Suddenly Seymour

Its that time of year when I create theatre posters at work. For the first time I decided to try a minimalist approach. It was a bit of a challenge but I like the end result.

There are two designs for Guys and Dolls because I was asked to redesign the original concept.

La Di Da

I thought I would show my process a little.  This isn't my favorite poster, I faced difficulties when my original concept turned out looking creepy.  So as you scroll down you can see my process and how I came to the finished design.  If you aren't familiar with this show, here is a synopsis.  It might help clarify what you are looking at.  When I work on show posters, I always begin by familiarizing myself with the show.

My final design

I always begin by researching what is out there on the interwebs.

Then I create an Illustrator document with my source material.

My early drawings are essentially wire frame.

Here is where things became creepy.  I wanted to depict "The man in the chair" character placing the record on the Victrola with the characters "coming to life".  Ugh, get him out of there!

A little better, but still lacking energy.

I decided the Chaperone should be highlighted, wanted to try a "champagne" color background given the boozy theme of the show.  Still not happy.

I decided I needed to break Miss Red out even more, things started moving better and it got more kinetic.  This design was approved and I'm happy with it.  Still, not my favorite, but I salvaged a failed concept.  Done.

Space Cat commands you...

I was digging around my old hard drive and I found this illustration that never saw the light of day.  I don't remember why I did it, but I find it delightfully weird.  Say hello to "Space Cat".
